Armors

There are three types of armor: light, medium, and heavy. There are also shields and armor/shield "extras" - items that can be added to armor or shields.

Description
This armor consists of shaped and fitted metal plates riveted and interlocked to cover the entire body. The suit includes gauntlets, heavy leather boots, a visored helmet, and a thick layer of padding that is worn underneath the armor. Buckles and straps distribute the weight over the body, so full plate hampers movement less than splint mail even though splint is lighter. Each suit of full plate must be individually fitted to its owner by a master armorsmith, although a captured suit can be resized to fit a new owner at a cost of 2d4 x 100 golds.

Buckler (Shield)

AC BonusArmor Check PenaltyArcane Spell Failure Chance
+1-15%
Description
This small metal shield is worn strapped to your forearm. You can use a bow or crossbow without penalty while wearing it. You can also use your shield arm to wield a weapon (whether as an offhand weapon or as the second hand for a two-handed weapon), but you take a -1 attack penalty because of the extra weight. This penalty stacks with those from fighting with your off hand/with two weapons. If you use a weapon with this hand, you lose the shield's AC bonus for the rest of the round. You cannot bash someone with this shield.

Light Shield - Wood or Steel

AC BonusArmor Check PenaltyArcane Spell Failure Chance
+1-15%
Description
You strap this shield to your forearm and grip it with your hand. A light shield's weight lets you carry other items in that hand, although you can use weapons with it.

You can bash an opponent with a light shield, using it as an offhand weapon. Used this way, a shield is a martial bludgeoning weapon. If you use your shield as a weapon, you lose your AC bonus until your next action (usually the next round). An enhancement bonus on the shield does not improve the effectiveness of a shield bash made with it, but the shield can be made into a magic weapon in its own right.

Heavy Shield - Wood or Steel

Tower Shield

AC BonusArmor Check PenaltyArcane Spell Failure Chance
+4-1050%
Max Dex BonusDescription
+2This massive wooden shield is nearly as tall as you are. In most cases, it provides the indicated shield bonus to your AC. However, you can instead use it as total cover, though you must give up your attacks to do so. The shield does not, however, provide cover against targeted spells; a spellcaster can cast a spell on you by targeting the shield you are holding. You cannot bash with a tower shield, nor can you use your shield hand for anything else.

When employing a tower shield in combat, you take a -2 penalty on attack rolls because of the shields encumbrance.

Armor Spikes

Description
You can have spikes added to your armor, which allows you to deal extra piercing damage on a successful grapple attack. The spikes count as a martial weapon. You can also make a regular melee attack (or offhand attack) with the spikes, and they count as a light weapon in this case.

An enhancement bonus to a suit of armor doesn't improve the spikes' effectiveness, but the spikes can be made into magic weapons in their own right.

Locked Gauntlet

Description
This armored gauntlet has small chains and braces that allow the wearer to attach a weapon to it so that it cannot be dropped easily. It provides a +10 bonus on any roll made to keep from being disarmed in combat. Removing or attaching a weapon to a locked gauntlet is a full-round action and provokes an attack of opportunity.

While the gauntlet is locked, you cannot use the hand wearing it for casting spells or employing skills. (You can still cast spells with somatic components, provided that your other hand is free.) Like a normal gauntlet, a locked gauntlet lets you deal lethal damage rather than non-lethal damage with an unarmed strike.

Weapons

There are three types of weapons: simple, martial, and exotic. Within these types, there are several classifications: light melee, one-handed melee, two-handed melee, and ranged. And, of course, there's simple brawling without any weapons at all.

Each weapon has an attack bonus. As a rule, a melee weapon's attack bonus consists of your base attack bonus + Str modifier + size modifier. For ranged weapons, your attack bonus is your base attack bonus + Dex modifier + size modifier + range penalty. Centaurs have a size modifier of -1. Certain feats and certain weapons offer an alternative (where you can use your Dex modifier on a melee weapon, or your Str modifier on a ranged weapon).

Each weapon or attack does a certain amount of damage if it is successful in hitting your opponent. There is also a critical strike value; in the event that you roll a natural 20 on an attack roll, you double, triple, or quadruple your damage roll results. Some weapons have an improved critical strike where you can increase your damage on a roll of 18 or 19 as well as 20.

One-handed and light weapons can be used together, allowing two weapon strikes in one attack. There is also a full attack that creatures who have natural weapons can use; in the case of centaurs, that involves striking with two hooves as well as the weapon in hand.
